Low Maintenance Laminate Floors

Laminate flooring is gaining in popularity among people that love the look of wood but don’t want all the work of caring for wood flooring. Most people have pretty busy lives and would love to have beautiful floors that are easy to care for. If you are one of those people, you will really like the look of laminate flooring and love the ease of caring for it. All you really need is a laminate floor mop, a dust mop, and laminate floor cleaner. Or you could combine all three of those and get a WizMop spray mop.
Routine Care of Laminate Flooring
Laminate flooring doesn’t take that much effort to maintain. It is recommended that you go over it with a microfiber dust mop at least twice a week. Sweep the dust mop in the direction the flooring was laid so that it will catch up debris that may have fallen between the grooves. The WizMop’s microfiber mop head doubles as a dust mop so you don’t have to buy a special tool.
Laminate floors need to be mopped occasionally but not often. Although they are sealed, the less water on the surface the better. Never use steam cleaners, power cleaners, or industrial mops. The less water on your laminate floor the better it is.
You won’t need much cleaner in the WizMop’s refillable receptacle. You can use a specially formulated laminate cleaner or make your own of equal parts vinegar, rubbing alcohol, and hot water. Spray a small area at a time and run the mop over the floor until you’ve used up all the liquid. The alcohol will insure that it dries quickly and the hot water will leave a streak-free finish. The WizMop spray mop is a good way to control the amount of liquid you put on your floor.
Never use furniture polish on laminate floors!
Maintaining a Beautiful Laminate Floor
It’s recommended that you use mats and area rugs specially made for laminate floors, especially in heavy traffic areas. Don’t use rubber-backed items as they can trap debris and moisture. Indoor and outdoor door mats will help limit dirt and particles humans track in. Door mats inside and outside pet doors will do the same for your family pets.
Hard shoes such as high heels should never touch your laminate floor. They tend to scratch and gouge no matter how carefully you walk. In fact, you should never walk on laminate floors in any type of foot covering other than socks or slippers. Keep your pets’ nail well trimmed to avoid their scratching the floor.
Removing Stains and Spills
It’s inevitable that you’ll have some spills and stains on your beautiful laminate floors. Don’t be upset because laminate floors were manufactured specifically to resist stains.
If you see scuff marks from shoes, an ordinary eraser will remove the marks. You can use acetone nail polish remover for shoe polish, tar, or nail polish spots and wipe with a damp water rag afterward. Soda, wine, crayon, and ink will wipe right up with a damp microfiber cloth. If crayon marks resist just add mineral spirits to the water and a bit of detergent will usually lift off stubborn ink stains.
If for some reason there is chewing gum on the laminate floor never use a metal knife to pry it off but a plastic one. Those same children that gummed up your floor will inevitably leave some blood stains occasionally. Blood will wipe right off with window cleaner (ammonia and water) then go over it with a soft dampened cloth.
Protect Your Laminate Floor
You should never let sunlight shine directly on laminate floors. The heat of direct sunlight can warp the flooring over time and the UV rays will fade the color. Avoid excessive heat or cold so the flooring doesn’t get warped. However, one of the advantages of laminate flooring is that if a section does become damaged you can easily and cheaply replace it.
Don’t use just any spray mop on your laminate flooring and be sure to use the right floor cleaner. The perfect laminate floor mop is the WizMop with its soft microfiber head and its ability to control the amount of liquid that goes on the floor.
